Study finds numerous viruses can be transmitted via feed

A recent study suggests feed played a key role during the 2013-14 outbreak of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) in the U.S.Scott Dee, a veterinary microbiologist and director of Pipestone Veterinary Services, discussed findings of the feed research at the Illinois Pork Expo in Springfield.“We never thought of feed as a risk factor (to transmit viruses),” Dee said. “But, during the time PEDV was moving across the U.S., we started to ask the question – is feed the way it moves?”Dee collaborated with universities and tested 12 viruses for survival rates in feed in transboundary models to see if a virus that starts in Beijing or Poland could wind up in Des Moines.
